WATCH: 'Tipperary won't win another title for a long time' - Hector's prediction at the Ploughing

TV presenter Hector Ó hEochagáin won't be endearing himself to hurling fans in the Premier County with his prediction that it will be a long time before Tipperary wins another All-Ireland hurling title.

Speaking at the opening day of that National Ploughing Championships in Laois, he noted that the Cannings used to sell hurleys at the event, but Tipperary legend Lar Corbett is back.

"It will be a long, long time before Tipperary win another hurling title. Limerick should be up here selling magic hurleys, because at the moment Limerick have magic hurleys," he said.

He was on familiar territory at the National Ploughing Championships in Laois for the start of the three-day national event on Tuesday morning.

"I got to know this area pretty well because when you are stuck in a car, going to the Electric Picnic, for hours and hours, you know Stradbally. And if you know Stradbally, you know Ratheniska," he said.

"It's funny that just over the road is the Electric Picnic, and now we are at the Electric Picnic for farmers," the popular TV presenter said.

He agreed that the wet weather wasn't dampening anyone's spirits at the event.

"Anyone who works outside in Ireland is well used to the rain. There's tens of thousands of people here and it's only half nine or 10 o'clock in the morning on the first day. I think they are built for it. There's plenty of wellies. Listen if you are coming this week, you have to have the wellies on," Hector said.

These are busy times for the TV and radio presenter with the return of his popular podcast as well as a new series on TG4 filmed in south east Asia.

"Look at that for a magnificent sight. Half nine in the morning, the rain is pelting down and people are happy in the rain," he said of the crowds already flocking to the ploughing championships.

"This is our country. We love the rain. Accept it," he enthused.
