Ballyhoura Active series - last race in the series

We had the last race in the Ballyhoura active series for 2018 last Friday night in Churchtown. This race isn’t the flattest race in the series or the fastest but it is very well organised and run on the night the committee do great work and it pays off. They had a fine crowd and the numbers were well up from last year, they had very good quality runners on the night, Niall Shanahan from An Bru AC won the race in 25.41 smashing the previous course record in the process. 2nd was Donal White Kerry Crusaders AC and 3rd was Riberio Pinto North Cork AC. Carol Finn had a fine win in the lady’s event winning in a time of 31.24 she was followed in by Sinead Buckley North Cork AC who was chased all the way to the finish line by Rachel Stokes Kerry Crusaders AC. It was a great conclusion to the series for 2018. We handed out all the series buffs on the night, there was loads of food and tea/Coffee for all, so well done to Churchtown AC for a great event and to all their stewards and helpers on the night.

Coillte had a big day on Saturday in the Ballyhoura trails as the facility was open and free to the public, Bikes were free in the morning and they were fully booked out. Lar Roach and his team put in a lot of work to get the place looking 100%. It is great to see a crowd out on the trails and using this top class facility. There were tents in place and food and refreshments for all who came on the day. Coillte have been great in setting up amenities in their forests for all of us to use and are always a pleasure to work with. I have been working with John Galvin and Lar Roach for the last couple of years and they are super guys to help and support with any project on Coillte property.

Last week also saw the return of the stag to the nature trail, The Nature trail was set up a few years ago for younger people and Family’s to do a treasure hunt of sorts on the red walking loop, and to find animals hidden in the trees. There are 20 different animals on a 2km loop of trail, we have flyers in the centre that give a little information on each animal or you can go on to the visitballyhoura website and download the information to a device. Kids love and the Nature trail it is such a distraction as it winds through different woods as you go around the trail. On the trail you pass through a mature Pine wood a Larch wood and an Oak wood, you cross over the river via the Iron bridge and hopefully find all 20 animals in the process.
