A new edition of Boherlahan born hiking enthusiast John G. O’Dwyer’s guide book, 50 Best Irish Walks – Easy to Moderate, features many walking trails from his native Tipperary.

The updated guide book detailing Mr O’Dwyer’s favourite rambles through the Irish countryside is a must-read for anyone interested in Ireland’s hills and wilder places.

The trails described range from lowland rambles to moderately challenging ascents taking anywhere from an hour and a half to four and a half hours to complete.

It is also a fascinating read for anyone wishing to explore the folklore and stories associated with the areas these walks pass through as many of them are recounted by Mr O’Dwyer throughout the book.

The book details walks from all regions of the island from the Causeway Coast of Antrim and Ballyhoura Hills in Limerick to the Sheep’s Head circuit in Cork and Spink Loop at Glendalough in Wicklow.

The trails are accompanied by detailed maps and beautiful photographs of the Irish landscape.

Three of the Tipperary walks described in the book are around the Knockmeadown Mountains. They are the 8km Knockmealdown Walk starting from Eamon Keating’s forest car park near Clogheen, the more difficult west Knockmealdown walk starting from Knockballiniry car park and the 12km Footsteps of Liam Lynch walk that takes in the monument at Goatenbridge commemorating the Anti-Treaty Civil War general.

Other south Tipperary walks featured are the popular 21km Suir Blueway from Clonmel to Carrick-on-Suir, the bracing hike to and from Slievenamon and the 14km Glenary Circuit walk including the Holy Year Cross in the Comeraghs above Clonmel.

The two north Tipperary walking trails detailed by Mr O’Dwyer are the 8km Eamon an Chnoic Loop near Upperchurch and 7km Silvermine Hills and Glenculloo Loop.

The updated guide book also features a day-by-day account of the 115km St Declan’s Way Walking trail between Cashel and Ardmore, which is steadily growing in popularity.

The Thurles based author encouraged Tipperary people to get out and try some of the walks at this time of year when the weather is good.

“My hope with a book like this is that it encourages people to develop a walking habit.

“It’s a gift that keeps on giving as it gives you great health and other benefits.”

The new edition of 50 Best Irish Walks – Easy to Moderate was published by Currach Books in March alongside Mr O‘Dwyer’s latest book Great Irish Pilgrim Journeys. They were both officially launched at an event at Cabragh Wetlands Centre near Thurles.

Mr O’Dwyer has been a hillwalker, mountain climber and writer about the Irish outdoors for over 30 years and he has written six books.
