Clonmel athlete William Maunsell had a superb year
2024 was a record-breaking year for William Maunsell, one that has been recognised by the Tipperary United Sports Panel, which has honoured him with an Annerville award.
The Clonmel athlete produced a superb performance to cross the line as the third Irish finisher in the Irish Life Dublin Marathon. His time for the classic distance of 26.2 miles was 2:14:22, which is a record for a Tipperary athlete in the event.
He was the tenth overall finisher in the race, which attracted some 22,500 competitors.
Earlier in the year he won the Cork City Half Marathon in dominant fashion and finished 15th in the London Marathon.
However, the best was yet to come.
In November William Maunsell produced a remarkable feat of strength and endurance by winning five marathons in five consecutive days on five different continents.
That amazing run started on the best possible note when he set a world record for the fastest marathon run in Antarctica when winning the race in exceptionally difficult running conditions in 2:38:42.
A day later it was onto Cape Town in South Africa, and after he lapped the entire field he won the race, which he followed up by winning the third leg of the Great World Race series a day later in Perth, Australia.
He made it five wins from five marathons in Istanbul, where the Asian and European legs of the race were held.
