LIVE: Plans lodged to carry out works on protected structure near castle in Tipperary

A planning application has been submitted to Tipperary County Council for proposed works to a protected structure close to Cahir Castle.

The owners of the protected structure have applied to carry out minor internal and external alterations including the construction of a rear extension, at No. 7 Castle Street, Cahir.

The building contains an artifact of historical significance, a sculpted male head dating back to the 15th Century in the front elevation of the property.

An Archaeological Impact Assessment was carried out due to the building being within the general archaeological Zone of Notification (ZON) for the historic town of Cahir, as well as the building containing the 15th Century artifact. 

The assessment concluded the recommendation that all ground disturbances should be archaeologically monitored, by a suitably experienced archaeologist, if planning permission were to be granted. 

An Architectural Heritage Impact Assessment was also undertaken as part of this planning application.

The findings of the assessment were that "the project represents a sensitive and considered approach to safeguarding the
building’s long-term use, preserving its architectural and historic value while ensuring it continues to function as a family home for generations to come."

Tipperary County Council have until February 6 2026 to make a decision on the proposal.
