Carrick-on-Suir's Brewery Lane Theatre to screen two films on Thursday, January 19

The films will be about a Comeragh Mountains highwayman and a War of Independence execution

Films about a  famous Comeragh Mountains highwayman and two War of Independence executions will be screened at Carrick-on-Suir’s Brewery Lane Theatre on Thursday, January 19 at 8pm.

Dungarvan Drama Circle performed Martina Collender’s play Crotty The Highwayman near Crotty’s Lake in the Comeraghs last May as part of the Comeraghs Wild Festival.

The play tells the true story of William Crotty, highwayman, and a local hero.  From his hideout in the Comeraghs, he led a band of associates for almost ten years.

Adventure, dodging the Redcoats who hunted him, arrogance, love, and betrayal are parts of  Crotty’s story.

This is a thought-provoking and moving play seen from the perspective of Crotty, his wife Mary, and David Norris who betrayed him.    The play was filmed in the Comeraghs by John Foley Images.

Crotty’s escapades coincided with a climatic event, The Great Frost (1739-1741). He had to abandon his cave in the Comeraghs for the relative comfort of the home of Norris, his accomplice who betrayed him.

He was arrested and hanged in Waterford in March 1742. One- third of the people of Munster perished in the Great Frost which lasted for twenty months.

The second film, Dioltas, (subtitled) tells the story of the arrest and execution of District Inspector Potter by the Volunteers during the War of Independence.

Potter was held as a hostage for the release of Thomas Traynor, father of ten children, who was due to be executed in Mountjoy. The British refused to release Traynor. Both men were executed.

Admission to these  two films costs €10 and includes refreshments.
