Carrick-on-Suir's two councillors are lobbying for a bus stop for Carrickbeg
Carrick-on-Suir’s two councillors are campaigning to secure a bus stop for the Carrickbeg area of their town.
The need for this bus stop for Bus Éireann buses was raised at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s July meeting by Cllrs David Dunne of Sinn Féin and Kieran Bourke of Fianna Fáil.
Both councillors have written separately to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Bus Éireann requesting a new bus stop be created in Carrickbeg for residents on that side of the town.
Cllr Dunne was first to raise the issue at the District meeting pointing out that there was a new bus to Dunmore East serving the town that was being well used.
Some of the bus drivers were travelling to Fiddown via the N24 to cross the river to go to Portlaw but he believed a bus stop in Carrickbeg would make them take the alternative route (Carrickbeg to Kilmeaden) while also serving residents in that part of the town.
He called on the Council to support this bus stop application.
Cllr Bourke, meanwhile, said the TII responded to his letter requesting the bus stop. He was informed that a review of bus routes was being carried out and his request would be examined.
He warned there was a danger the bus service linking Carrick-on-Suir to Dunmore East would be lost to the town with all buses going from Piltown.
Cllr Bourke pointed out that the Carrick-on-Suir to Dunmore East bus service was very important for Carrick-on-Suir people because it stops outside the front door of Waterford University Hospital on its way to Dunmore East.
