Carrick-on-Suir Darkness Into Light’s 2024 Tree of Hope has found a permanent home at Ballylynch Remembrance Garden.
Members of the organising committee of the town’s annual 5km walk/run in aid of suicide prevention charity, Pieta, gathered at the garden at Ballylynch estate on Tuesday evening, September 10 to plant the young Weeping Silver Pear tree.

They were joined by Ballylynch estate residents including those involved in maintaining the community’s peaceful and beautiful garden.

Some local residents grieving the death of a family member by suicide helped dig and prepare the ground for the planting of the tree.

Mary Power of Carrick-on-Suir Darkness Into Light Committee, said the Tree of Hope was planted on International Suicide Prevention Day and thanked all the residents who attended the ceremony.

“Suicide permeates every layer of society; it knows no discrimination but our community never stops increasing awareness and supporting those struggling,” she said.

“We are all missing someone today, but I think they would be proud,” she added.

A plaque inscribed with the words: “Planted on 10/9/2024 In Honour of Those We Love And Always Remember” has been erected at the foot of the tree.

The Tree of Hope was originally displayed beside a memorial table in the hall of Carrick’s St Mary’s CBS Green School when an estimated 600 people gathered there before dawn on May 11 for the start of the town’s 2024 Darkness Into Light walk/run.

Participants hung messages of remembrance for loved ones who died by suicide from the tree.

Thanks

Mary Power thanked Topline Cleary’s store in Carrick-on-Suir for donating the tree, Pat Callanan for his assistance with sourcing the plaque to mark the planting of the tree and Darren Waters for creating the plaque.

She also thanked the residents of Ballylynch for allowing the Darkness Into Light Committee plant the Tree of Hope in their beautiful remembrance garden.

Ballylynch Remembrance Garden commemorates deceased residents of Ballylynch housing estate and was officially opened in August, 2017.
