Tidy Towns judges praise Carrick-on-Suir and increase its points in national contest

Carrick-on-Suir Tidy Towns & Environment Group is celebrating a significant increase in the town’s marks in this year’s National Tidy Towns Competition.

The town secured 315 marks in the contest, which is an increase of 11 marks.

Carrick’s impressive performance is a major boost and encouragement to the voluntary group that held a relaunch event in Carrick Town Hall in May.

The Tidy Towns & Environment Group said Carrick-on-Suir obtained extra marks in all categories of the contest and the judges noted the substantial works underway in the town that will come to fruition in time for next year’s competition.

In their report, the Tidy Towns judges commended the team of volunteers who help keep Carrick spick-and- span and praised their three-year plan and Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club’s Biodiversity Action Plan.

The judges described Carrick-on-Suir as a “delightful” town to visit and said the jewel in its crown, Ormond Castle, looked “splendid”.

They were also full of praise for the appearance of other landmarks including Carrick Town Hall, St Nicholas Church, Carrick Heritage Centre, Castle Park and Town Park.

The judges commented that Carrick’s housing estates and approach roads were in good condition during their visit and the town was “tidy and litter free”. They commended the new planting along the N24 in the town and in the Bog Field amenity area.

Continuing engagement with the local authority to improve the appearance of derelict buildings in the town, the need to continue efforts to tackle dog fouling along the river bank and some littering in Carrickbeg were areas for improvement the judges cited in their report.

Carrick-on-Suir Tidy Towns & Environment Group thanked Tipperary County Council, SuperValu, the town’s business owners, residents associations, schools, Lions Club, other community groups and every individual who put in effort to improve the town.

“Our biggest thanks goes to our great group of volunteers from home and abroad, who turned up with us and turned up their sleeves and made a difference. Maithiú. Well done,” the Group added.
