A senior council official has assured Carrick-on-Suir people the removal of dangerous asbestos as part of the clean up of the town’s derelict former Goldcrop site will be carried out by a specialist company abiding by stringent EU health and safety regulations.
Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District Director of Services Brian Beck gave this assurance at the latest monthly meeting of the district’s councillors after Cllr Kieran Bourke highlighted that representatives of Brewery Lane Theatre were concerned about the removal of the asbestos during the upcoming clean up of the 2.7 acres site on the North Quay.
The Carrick-on-Suir councillor said Brewery Lane Theatre members were afraid particles of asbestos will get into the theatre that is situated close to the site. He stressed the importance of proper measures being taken by whatever contractor is engaged to remove it.
Mr Beck responded that the council was very aware of the health and safety issues around removing and disposing of asbestos. It was a job that must be carried out carefully and properly.
He assured the public a very specialist firm will be engaged to remove the asbestos from the site. He stressed asbestos removal was “highly regulated” in the EU.
“If there are concerns, I am sure we all can arrange to discuss them with them,” he added.
Tipperary County Council secured planning permission to carry out extensive remediation works to clear the site of its derelict buildings and structures after the local authority purchased the site from the Cork based Goldcrop company in 2022.
Last November, the council secured €984,000 from the Rural Regeneration & Development Fund to assist with the costs of cleaning up and redeveloping the former Goldcrop site.
The council says it intends to use the RRDF grant to demolish the derelict buildings on the site and to seek Part 8 planning permission to “activate” the site including carrying out a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) design brief.
