Cashel Garda Station at Hogan Square, Cashel
A local councillor in Cashel has revealed that the Garda Station in Cashel looks set to reopen soon to tackle rising crime rates and anti-social behaviour in the town.
Independent councillor Liam Browne said in a post online that the Garda station in Hogan Square is close to being opened again, with hopes that this "will take place before the beginning of November".
Cashel Garda Station closed on 23rd November last year for necessary refurbishment works, with Garda services temporarily moving to the old Motor Tax Office in Friar Street for the duration of the works.
The works were initially expected to last until the summer of 2024, but the refurbishment has seen some delays.
At todays District Council meeting, we had the opportunity to meet with high ranking members of An Garda Siochána and discuss numerous issues around criminal and anti social behaviour in Cashel and the surrounding areas.
In a meeting between local councillors and Gardaí on Monday, the reopening of the station was discussed, and Cllr Browne said "many local concerns were raised".
Cllr Browne also said there was "good news" regarding the station's opening hours, as the local council received commitment from the gardaí that the new station will be manned 24 hours a day, with the station open to the public from 9-5, Monday to Friday.
"This is a significant extension of hours from before the station closed, and will be very welcome," Browne said.
Cashel station is also set to be used as a training centre for young Gardaí, giving them "on the job" experience during their training period.
"It is hoped that as part of this training, there will be a significant increase in "on the street" patrolling, which will increase Garda visibility in the town," Browne said.
The change is set to make a significant difference to the policing of Cashel, with an increased garda presence and easier access to garda services for locals.
