Cllr Liam Browne brought up the issue of not knowing where to direct complaints regarding the homeless unit opened in Tipperary by Laois County Council

Issues with Laois County Council homeless unit in Tipperary says councillor at meeting

Cllr Liam Browne raised the issue of John Street in Cashel being used for homeless accommodation by other County Councils at the recent Tipperary Cahir Cashel MD December meeting.

He mentioned that people had been in touch regarding trouble between businesses and people using this service.

Cllr Browne asked if Tipperary County Council “were notified when another local authority opened up homeless services or even a step down from Portlaoise prison, in Tipperary.”

A spokesperson for the council said that: “Tipperary County Council wouldn’t be notified if it’s a council outside of the Southern region. We work with Waterford and Kilkenny, if it wasn’t one of those areas we wouldn’t be notified.

Cllr Liam Browne asked if he had to take people’s issues to Laois County Council directly in this instance or can Tipperary County Council engage with it.

The council's spokesperson replied that they would take the issue back to Helen Butler, the homeless officer in Nenagh and that she was already aware of this issue.

The housing spokesperson said: “I know she’s aware of it so she may have been in contact with Laois already.”

The council then said they would ask Helen Butler to contact Cllr Browne regarding this issue.
