‘Impossible’ to negotiate ‘unsafe’ junction in Tipperary

Cllr Pat English said that the existing T junction is very unsafe for anyone trying to exit onto the Cahir Road, considering the speed of traffic on the road

The residents of a number of estates in the Ballingarrane area of Clonmel are “finding it impossible” to drive onto the Cahir Road, a meeting of Clonmel Borough District was told.

Deputy Mayor Pat English stated that the existing T junction is very unsafe for anyone trying to exit onto the Cahir Road, considering the speed of traffic on the Cahir Road.

He said that this affected residents who drove from the Wheatfield, Ashgrove Drive/Lawn/Court, Glenview Close, Ballingarrane and Garden Close estates.

Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said it was difficult for motorists at “pinch points” such as 8.30 in the morning and school drop-off and collection times.

She thought that the developer of the most recent estate built in the area would have been required to provide a roundabout.

However, a written reply to the meeting from District Engineer Nicola Keating stated that the existing T junction at Ballingarrane had adequate sightlines, as per the requirements of the Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets.

It could therefore be considered safe for vehicles exiting onto the Cahir Road.

Cllr English requested the District Engineer to have another look at the situation in that location.
