Warning issued over changeover to hard water in Tipperary's largest town

Claims that cost will be incurred by householders

Warning issued over changeover to hard water in Tipperary's largest town

Uisce Éireann says the work will improve the security and resilience of the water supply in Clonmel

Uisce Éireann should inform those residents in Clonmel who receive their water supply from the Poulavanogue Water Treatment Plant that the supply is being changed to the hard water supply that comes from the Monroe scheme, Cllr Tom Acheson stated at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District.

He said people should be aware that a cost would be incurred in this because they would have to instal water softeners to protect their electrical appliances, like he had to do.

He didn’t believe people were aware of this situation.

The Mayor, Pat English, said that he lives in an area that has the same water supply from Monroe and he agreed that it didn’t do a household’s electrical appliances any good.

He said the issue would be raised at the council’s meeting with Uisce Éireann.

The water utility company recently announced that it is progressing works to improve the security and resilience of the water supply in Clonmel.

In a statement, Uisce Éireann said “The project represents a multi-million euro investment in water infrastructure and will result in homes and businesses in Clonmel and surrounding areas being able to enjoy a safer, more secure water supply. Shareridge is delivering this project on Uisce Éireann’s behalf”.

The statement added that the work would “address ongoing operational issues that result in interruptions to the water supply and Boil Water Notices; and allow for Clonmel’s Poulavanogue water supply to be removed from the EPA’s Remedial Action List, which identifies ‘at-risk’ drinking water supplies”.

It says the major investment will involve “an upgrade to the treatment facilities at Monroe Water Treatment Plant (WTP); the installation of 15 kilometres of new water mains; and upgrades to Rathronan pumping station, which will connect the Monroe supply to the Clonmel North Reservoir and Poulavanogue network.

“The project will also provide for a more secure water supply to those currently supplied by the existing Monroe WTP from the large Clonmel North Reservoir.

“Once the Monroe WTP upgrade works are complete, customers who were supplied from Poulavanogue WTP will now be supplied from Monroe WTP,” the statement added.
