A 24 year-old woman appeared before Clonmel District Court this afternoon (Monday, October 6) charged with the murder of 47-year-old Pavel Javorski at an apartment in Carrick-on-Suir on Saturday night.

Karolina Kovacova with an address at O'Callaghan's Lane, Carrick-on-Suir appeared before Judge John O'Leary at a special sitting of the court at Clonmel Courthouse shortly after 4pm.

She is charged with the murder of Pavel Javorski at O'Callaghan's Lane (also known locally as Callanan's Lane) in Carrick-on-Suir on Saturday, October 4.

Det. Garda Ruairí Ryan of Carrick-on-Suir Garda Station gave evidence to the court of arresting Ms Kovacova for the purpose of charging her at 2.04pm today.

He said he cautioned her with the assistance of an interpreter and brought her to the custody area of Clonmel Garda Station at 2.47pm where he formally charged and cautioned her. She made no reply to the charge after it was read out to her and after she was cautioned with the assistance of an interpreter.

Defence solicitor Aidan Leahy's application for legal aid was granted by Judge O'Leary. Mr Leahy said his client was a Czech national and requested a certificate for a Czech language interpreter, which was granted by the judge.

The solicitor told the court Ms Kovacova had very little English and will find prison a difficult environment. In view of this, he requested that she be given whatever support and assistance she required in prison.

Judge O'Leary granted Sgt. Tom O'Brien's application for the accused to be remanded in custody to appear before Clonmel District Court tomorrow (Tuesday, October 7) via video link.

As he remanded the accused woman in custody and adjourned the case, he recommended the prison governor accommodate the accused, taking into account her vulnerability as she has little English.
