Clonmel High School beat Thurles CBS in Tipperary schools hurling final

Games Development Administrator Tom Fitzgerald presents the trophy to Clonmel High School captain Aidan McMaugh

The Clonmel High School Under 16 hurlers were successful in the recent County A Blitz held in Coolmore Dr Morris Park in Thurles.

The school had five competitive matches over the course of the day in what proved a great day’s hurling for all schools involved.

The competition, run by the County GDAs (Games Development Administrators) is a development competition played without county minor players to help these schools prepare for the Under 17 Munster championship and the Fitzgerald Cup, which these sides will face into next year.

The Clonmel school began with a 2-6 to 0-4 win over Our Lady’s, Templemore before falling to Thurles CBS 1 on a very competitive 2-8 to 1-7 scoreline.

With Thurles CBS entering two teams, it was a different outcome against Thurles CBS 2, as the High School emerged 0-7 to 0-3 winners.

These results meant a straight knockout tie with Cashel Community School to see who would advance to play Thurles CBS 1 in the county final.

In what proved a tight and tense affair, it was the Cashel school who led 1-2 to 1-1 at half-time.

The second half continued in the same vein but it was the High School who found the extra gear to earn a 1-5 to 1-3 victory and ensure a re-match with Thurles CBS 1 in the final.

An early goal for the High School by Ballyneale’s Patrick Lyons and points by Ben Roche and Dara Beckett sent them on their way, as they turned the tables on the day’s earlier result, producing their performance of the day to secure a 1-9 to 0-1 victory and win the county championship.

This was a whole panel effort throughout the day for the High School.

Nathan Wynne was solid throughout in goal, while the standout performances defensively were from Enda Condon, Cruz Peters and Jerome Phelan.

Ben Roche and captain Aidan McMaugh worked hard at midfield while upfront Ben Fuller was steady on the frees and was ably supported from play by Dara Beckett, Dylan Condon, Enda Nolan and Paddy Power.
