Liberty Square in Thurles
Thurles Community Activist Tommy Barrett has issued a statement his views on the upcoming general election and some issues he feels should be considered for Thurles over the coming years.
“There are many issues that I feel need to be addressed in Thurles by the three TDs that will be elected to the North Tipperary and North West Kilkenny area.
“Obviously in Thurles a major issue is traffic congestion.
“We need to have the funding secured to construct the inner relief road from Clongour to the Mill Road which will play an important part in easing traffic congestion in the town.
“I understand that all the lands have been acquired by Tipperary County Council, this needs to be a priority issue for our newly elected TDs.
“Enough talking has been done about this, we need the monies allocated to this project and works need to be commenced on this project without delay.
“I have attended all the public meetings in relation to a bypass for Thurles.
“I feel that our efforts should first be focused on the delivery of the relief road.
“I think it would be a useful exercise for the next Transport Minister to meet a delegation from Thurles to discuss the Bypass project as its essential that it is on the National Development Plan and we have a review of this plan coming up over the coming months.
“I think it is important that we continue to see an investment within education in Thurles.
“Already it has been fantastic to see the continued growth of MIC Thurles.
“I would like to see a discussion take place around MIC Thurles acquiring the Munster Hotel site to accommodate the expansion plans of the college.
“I also feel that local democracy has been eroded since town councils were abolished in 2014.
“Any public representative I have spoken to agrees this was a mistake and should not have
happened. I will be interested to see if our newly elected representatives will address this
issue.
“In conclusion I wish all candidates the very best of luck in the upcoming general election. We want TDs that will fight to secure funding and resources for our county.”
