Gardaí have warned the public not to use edible cannabis after three teenagers in the Clonmel Garda District were hospitalised over the Christmas period after it’s believed they consumed the illegal drug.
A Clonmel Garda Station spokesperson appealed to parents to be vigilant as the edible cannabis can look like a packet of sweets and could make a child gravely ill if they innocently ate them.
The warning has been issued after Drugs Unit gardaí seized a large quantity of suspected edible cannabis, cannabis oil and cannabis vape pens along with a quantity of cash during a search of a house in Clonmel Garda District last Saturday, December 31.
The drugs, estimated to have a street value of €53,000, were found by the gardaí while they were executing a search warrant, issued under the Misuse of Drugs Act, on the property.
The garda spokesperson declined to say where exactly in the Clonmel Garda District the drugs were found in case it impacted the investigation.
A man, aged in his 20s, was arrested in connection with the drugs seizure and detained at Clonmel Garda Station for questioning. He was released without charge on New Year’s Day pending the submission of a file on the case to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The Clonmel Garda Station spokesperson stressed they were not saying the drugs seized in this operation were connected with the hospitalisation of the teenagers but they wished the public to be aware that it’s dangerous to consume edible cannabis.
Two of the three teenagers were very seriously ill when they were hospitalised.
She understands that all three teenagers are now out of danger and recovering.
“Gardaí are particularly interested in speaking to anybody who may have knowledge about any edible cannabis.
“We would be particularly concerned that any packets of edible cannabis are currently in the public domain and to warn people not to use them and for parents to be vigilant.
“They can, for all the world, look like a packet of sweets and an unsuspecting child could take them and become gravely ill,” she said.
