The proposed Active Travel Scheme aims to improve roads and footpaths infrastructure between Carrick-on-Suir Rail Station (pictured) and the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists
A decision on the planning application for the Active Travel Scheme for the area between Carrick-on-Suir Railway Station and Carrick town centre will be made at this month’s meeting of Carrick Municipal District’s councillors.
The Part 8 planning application that proposes improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure for this part of Carrick came before Carrick MD’s December meeting but was deferred for a month as an issue with a raised platform proposed for the Cregg Road area needed to be sorted out.
Carrick-on-Suir Fianna Fáil councillor Kieran Bourke proposed the deferral of the decision on the planning application outlining that councillors discussed it at a workshop before the meeting and there was one little outstanding issue with this raised platform.
“The director (of services) said he would get the design team to look at the and see if they can come up with a solution to stop the surface water causing issues for properties in that area,” Cllr Bourke explained.
Carrick Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr David Dunne said he agreed with Cllr Bourke and highlighted how residences in that area were flooded previously.
The council should do what it could to alleviate the situation there.
“We have to protect people from flooding and hopefully the design team will take on board what we said.”
Carrick MD Director of Services Brian Beck said the council hadn’t any objection and was happy to postpone the decision.
District Administrator Marie O’Gorman informed councillors the deadline for reaching a decision on whether to adopt or reject the planning application was January 23.
The Active Travel scheme proposes improved pedestrian/cycling infrastructure between Carrick Railway Station, Castle Park, St Nicholas Car Park, Presentation Primary School, Carrick-on-Suir Further Education & Training Centre and the Sean Healy Library along with traffic calming measures, lighting, altered road markings and associated site works for active travel.
The areas included in the proposed scheme are Cregg Road and Park View (R697), Marian Avenue, N24, Castle Park, The Park, The Green, Sean Healy Library, Greenside North and Carrick Swan GAA Club.
