Dublin Metropolitan District Court has fined Uisce Éireann (Irish Water) €1,000 for issues at Mullinahone Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The judge imposed the fine at a hearing on February 9 in a case taken by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
According to the EPA website, Irish Water pleaded guilty to breaches of the conditions of its Waste Water Discharge Licence, which were:
1. Failing to comply with condition 5.4 on January 1 2020, by failing to upgrade the Mullinahone Wastewater Treatment Plant so as to ensure compliance with the emission limit values as set out in Schedule A of the said licence.
2. Failing to comply with condition 3.2 on January 21, 2020, in that one or more specified discharges from the waste water works exceeded the emission limit value for Ammonia as set out in Schedule A: Discharges and Discharge Monitoring of the said licence.
3. Failing to comply with condition 3.2 on September 8, 2021, in that one or more specified discharges from the waste water works exceeded the emission limit value for Orthophosphate (as P) as set out in Schedule A: Discharges and Discharge Monitoring of the said licence.
Judge Halpin imposed a fine of €1,000 for charge one, taking charges two and three into consideration.
Costs were also awarded to the EPA.
