The Suir Dragon Paddlers (CRC) are a dragon boat team of breast cancer survivors from county Tipperary and surrounding counties.
The team was set up in February 2013 and is based in the Clonmel Rowing Club. The team train on the river Suir using Clonmel Rowing Club as a base.
As a part of the ten-year celebrations of the club the team are going to compete in the fourth International Dragon Boat Festival in Barcelona.
It takes place on May 20 and May 21. The team are currently training on Wednesday nights at 7.30pm nights and on Saturday at 12.30pm in readiness for the competition. New members are always welcome.
The team are fundraising to help towards the cost of a ten-seater boat which will help with training on the water. The cost of the boat is €19,000. The team is a registered charity which hopefully will help businesses to donate towards the cost of the boat. Registered Charity N 20206497 The positive results of Dr McKenzie’s research sparked the start of the dragon boat racing movement. Women with breast cancer are at risk of developing lymphedema following surgical and/or medical treatment for the disease. Women have challenged traditional advice about limiting extreme activity to prevent lymphedema by participation in dragon boat racing.
Dragon boat paddling contributes to social, emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of health. It has so many health benefits.
Those include upper body exercise, teamwork, support, general well-being and fun.
