LATEST: 'I felt morally obliged to vote against it' Tipperary TD slams contentious bill

Tipperary TD Michael Lowry has slammed last night's vote on the Mother and Baby Redress Bill.

The bill was contentious because approximately 24,000 survivors who resided in one of the homes from birth to six months will be excluded from the redress scheme.

Mr Lowry said having listened to those impacted in Tipperary, he could not vote for the bill.

In a statement today, the deputy called the scheme "unfair and inequitable"

"I could not justify the Government’s rationale on this matter’ he said. I felt morally obliged to vote against it," said Mr Lowry.

The bill passed 73 to 62.

Tipperary TD's Alan Kelly, Martin Browne and Mattie McGrath also voted against the bill.
