Death of Denis ‘Dinny’ Hannon
The death occurred on Tuesday, March 7 at Croí Oír, Our Lady’s Hospital, Cashel of Denis Hannon late of Meldrum. Dinny as he was affectionately known was son of the late Denis and Mary Hannon (nee Callaghan) and hailed from a family of five boys and one girl.
He was predeceased by his brother Jim who died in 1986 and by his brother Tom who died in 2017.
Dinny who had reached the age 75 years was lovingly supported at home by his wife Catherine up to some time before his passing when ill health necessitated hospital admission.
He hailed from one of the oldest families in the area as generations of the Hannon family are buried in Killballyherberry Cemetery where his father who died in 1975 is also buried. His mother Mary who died in 1986 is buried in Dualla.
In the early 60s Dinny began working for the late Con Heffernan in his joinery business as well as serving in his bar and grocery trade. He was a valued member in the Heffernan household as he was a great support for Con, his late wife Betsy and their family for many years.
During hard economic times, Dinny with the help of his brother Paddy began work restoring old furniture and doing upholstery at his home in Meldrum first in a old cow shed before building a work shed. Here he proved himself to be a gifted craftsman and his work of restoration can be seen in many homes today.
To an old friend Noel O’Connor who today carries on a upholstery business in Boherlahan he passed on his skills.
In 1991 he married Catherine Murphy from Lisvernane and together at special functions at halls and private houses they helped at catering. Dinny never forgot his roots and throughout his life he displayed a great sense of place and with his good knowledge of local history enjoyed tracing of former times.
Above all, he was a gentleman of quiet disposition with a strong faith and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
On Thursday, March 9, his remains were reposing at Devitts Funeral Home Cashel and on the following day after requiem mass celebrated by Fr Joe Egan PP at the Church of Our Lady of Fatima Dualla interment took place in the adjoining cemetery.
He survived by his wife Catherine and daughters April and Zoe also by Paddy and Jerry (brothers) Eileen Hickey (sister) Chloe, Amelia, Sophie, Grace and Bree (grandchildren) Danny Gleeson (son in law) Paddy O'Donoghue (Zoe’s partner) brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
Peace to his soul.
