Great joy in Tipp as talented Irish basketballer stars in big win over England

A huge traveling party from Clonmel went to Cardiff in Wales to see Anna O Shaughnessy and the Irish team take on our nearest neighbouring countries and all who made the trek were over the moon at the fantastic Irish performance that brought home the cup. Anna was part of the Irish Under 18 Ladies Basketball team that brought great joy by winning the 4 nations tournament in Cardiff last Thursday.

Anna was born and lives in San Francisco but her mother is Sinead Foley from Garryroe in Clonmel and is a sister of the well known former Tipperary senior footballer Derry Foley. Her father is from Coachford in Cork and many made the trek from there too. The Clonmel contingent was over in Cardiff last week in huge numbers to support Anna who played a key role as the Irish side stormed to a famous 60-53 comeback to beat England at the Archers Arena in Cardiff.

The Irish side also defeated Scotland and Wales but the win over a strong English side meant that Ireland have plenty to build on ahead of the FIBA European Championships which are on the horizon. All around Clonmel and further afield will watch with interest this year as more action unfolds but for now the cup is won. The Irish team that won the cup is as follows:

Ireland U18 Women's Roster:  Anna O'Shaughnessy, Orlagh Gormley, Emer Dunne, Rebecca Sexton, Caitlin Gloeckner, Lucy Devoy, Karolina Gierszal, Grace Prenter, Emma Tolan, Clara Boyce, Aisling Moran, Caoimhe Gilligan, Bree Shelly, Ava Walshe, Issy McSwenney, Katie O'Sullivan, Rachel Lynch.

 U-18 Girls Four Nations Results:

Thursday April 13

Ireland 60-53 England
