Up to 10 bags of rubbish are dumped every weekend along the old N7 road in Tipperary

Up to a dozen plastic bags full of rubbish are being dumped every weekend on the old N7 between Nenagh and Birdhill, Cllr Fiona Bonfield told the April meeting of the Nenagh Municipal District Authority.

She said she had witnessed the dumping on several Mondays at Kilmastulla on her way into Nenagh.

She contacted the litter warden about the problem and urged that action be taken by the council to find those responsible.
Cllr John Carroll said it was terrible to see the litter strewn along the road for a considerable distance. “I hope those responsible will be named and shamed, because they are not living 100 miles away.”

Cllr John “Rocky” McGrath said the council needed to get more forceful with people littering the countryside. “We should have a policy of zero tolerance for littering and dumping.”

Cathaoirleach Cllr Hughie McGrath said 10 plastic bags of rubbish were dumped in Abbey Lane in Nenagh on Easter Saturday.

He rang the council’s out-of-hours service and the bags were taken away within an hour.

He wanted to point out how effective the out-of-hours service in the Environment Section has been.

Cllr Ger Darcy also complimented those in the out-of-hours service, saying he had reported a significant oil spill on the road at Ardcroney recently and the staff were on site and did a great clean-up within an hour.

Meanwhile, a greenfield site in Rathcabbin were hundreds of tonnes of organic waste had been deposited, causing a stench and an environmental hazard, has been transformed due to a clean-up project taken on by Tipperary County Council, Cllr

Michael O’Meara stated at the meeting. He said the work carried out by the local authority to clear the area of the matter left by former occupiers, Shannon Vermicomposting, had transformed the site into an area as level as a billiard table.

“An excellent job has been down there,” said Cllr O’Meara, referring to the decision of the council to move all the organic waste from the site and deposit it at the local authority’s old landfill site at Ballyveny, near Toomevara.

However, he said the road linking the site with Rathcabbin was now in need of immediate attention.
