Eabha and her art teacher Helen Ryan with Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show
There were huge celebrations in St. Anne’s this week as Éabha Byrnes returned to school after her Junk Kouture success. Éabha’s colourful creation, ‘Drowning Duchess’, was created using swimming floats. Éabha was among 10 National Finalists chosen to represent Ireland in the International Junk Kouture Competition in London later this year.
Junk Kouture is a competition o f a very high standard, where second level students create couture clothing using recycled material or ‘junk’. St. Anne’s students have enjoyed creating garments for Junk Kouture for over 10 years. The competition challenges their creativity in many ways. St. Anne’s students have always qualified for the National finals on 3 previous occasions.
This year is only the second year that Junk Kouture Ireland continues on to an international Final. Last year the World Final took place in Adu Dhabi. In 2023 the World Final will take place on 12th October in Wembley Stadium. Students form Ireland, Milan, New York, London, Paris and Abu Dhabi will compete on this illustrious international stage.
St. Anne’s Art Teacher, Helen Ryan, said ‘I am so delighted for Éabha and for St. Anne’s to represent Ireland in the World Final of the Junk Kouture Competition. Éabha worked very hard and was very committed to creating an inspiring, colourful and eye-catching piece’.
Éabha, herself, said ‘I really enjoyed doing Junk Kouture and the whole experience in Dublin at the All-Ireland Final was fantastic. It was so exciting performing on the stage in the 3 Arena and appearing on the Late Late Show was an unforgettable experience.’ Éabha said she is ‘really looking forward to performing in the Wembley Stadium in London in October’. We wish Éabha the very best of luck in Wembley.
