The Clonmel Sports Hub, built at a cost of €5.5 million, was officially opened in June
Any club that wishes to use the new Clonmel Sports Hub needs to have the necessary insurance, District Administrator Carol Creighton has stated.
One group that wanted to use the facility had no paperwork or documentation relating to insurance, and it was working to get that sorted as soon as possible, Ms Creighton told a meeting of Clonmel Borough District.
She said they would all agree that the more the sports hub was used the better.
She said she couldn’t imagine that additional funds would be paid for temporary toilets when four toilets were already available. She agreed that these toilets could be open for a longer period of time but they were also conscious of anti-social behaviour.
Cllr Michael Murphy said that a sports club that understood it had permission to use the sports hub was prevented from doing so when it arrived there with between 50-60 athletes, and had to use the bypass instead.
They were talking about clubs with excellent structures and public liability insurance who wanted to use the hub, and the more people who used it the better.
Cllr Murphy said they needed to develop a framework where clubs with a good governance structure could use the athletics track.
They had a really good governance structure at the hub, with the board, an excellent facilities manager and the three clubs - Clonmel Athletic Club, Clonmel Cycling Club and Clonmel Triathlon Club - working very well together.
He understood that the toilets were only open until lunchtime and children with special needs had to use the facilities at TUS (Technological University of the Shannon), which had been very accommodating.
Cllr John FitzGerald said it wasn’t great when people came to town to use the sports hub and ended up running along the bypass, when they had a state-of-the-art facility in the town.
Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said the toilets were only open when the manager was present, and a mobile toilet would be welcome there.
There were other clubs that wished to use the running track, and she also asked about direction signs and bins.
Carol Creighton said she had forwarded the request about toilets, a direction sign and a sign banning dogs to TUS, which managed the facility.
The Clonmel Sports Hub, built at a cost of €5.5 million, was officially opened last month by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
