Members of the new Carrick Paddlers Club have enjoyed a number of outings on the River Suir this month and are planning another one this Thursday, July 27.
The club hosted its first outing for members on the river on Thursday, July 13. It was a training session under the guidance of two local instructors Anna O’Toole and Emma Hennessy.
The club, which has 15 registered members so far, is affiliated to Canoeing Ireland and is providing skills training to members with a view to developing kayaking and canoeing services locally.
Carrick Paddlers has been established with support from Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club, the An Post Postal Survey, Tipperary County Council and Tipperary Sports Partnership.
It has a premises for storing boats and equipment under one of the arches of Dillon Bridge in the town.
Carrick Paddlers Chairman Conor Power said he was delighted to have secured a premises, boats and safety equipment and to be able at last to be visible on the river in Carrick.
He added that the priority for Carrick Paddlers is to train its own instructors who can then lead kayaking and canoeing events for the local community.
