There was great sadness in Two-Mile Borris last week with the news of the passing of one of its most popular and much-loved ex-pats, Seamus Moloughney.
Mr Moloughney moved from his native Tipperary to Melbourne, Australia in 1969 and made himself an important figure in the Irish community down under for many years prior to his passing.
He was heavily involved in the committee that selected the Melbourne Rose for the annual Rose of Tralee festival, and he was the Father of the Chair, Christina Moloughney and longtime MC Patrick Moloughney.
Seamus represented the Melbourne Rose committee in Tralee at the International Rose Festival on numerous occasions as well as being an avid supporter and platinum sponsor for the Melbourne Rose.
Sponsoring flights through Emerald Travel- his own business - for the winning rose every year and engaging with corporate sponsors to support the event and assist in making it the success it is, he was a huge reason for its ongoing success. Due to his career and moving abroad, did Two-Mile-Borris native became a hugely well travelled man, along with his wife Mary, they owned a taxi business in Melbourne initially before he moved into the travel industry which eventually led to him opening Shamrock Travel in 1989.
In 2003, he and his wife Mary, and daughter Christina in the business and it was here that he helped so many of the Irish community settle in the area after moving abroad, using his position to help with sponsorship.
However, he is most well known as a regular fixture at the Rose of Tralee and the Tipperary Rose Centre sent their sincere condolences to the Moloughney family and highlighted how loved he was amongst the Rose and Irish Australian community.
“It’s difficult to find words to express our sadness and sincere condolences at this time.
“Please take a moment to share a prayer for the Moloughney family and the Irish community in Australia.
“It is sad for so many to say goodbye to this larger than life character who has made a lasting impression on so many people’s lives. God Bless you Seamus. You will live forever in so many hearts.”
