In spite of an overcast sky a large crowd attended the annual graveyard Mass at Ballymoreen at the end of July.

The committee gave a special thanks to Fr Tom Fogarty, PP, who blessed the plaque “in memory of all those interred here, including babies and those in unmarked graves”.

Over the years, family and local historians had brought to our attention the many adults and especially premature and stillborn children buried without a headstone.

The wording was prepared by the Ladies’ Committee and it will add to the Ballymoreen story which began when it was recognised as a church by the Papal Taxation Records for 1291 and 1302.

Thanks also to Fr George Bourke who helped with the blessing of the graves; to Thomas Bracken who selected the hymns and organised the choir; to Janice Costello for the readings and sacristan duties; to Ger Moloughney and Dan Fitzpatrick for the collection, to all for their generous support; to Tommy Healy for the Public Address system; to Michael Kinane for flagpole and flags, to Muintir na Tire and Band Hall for the chairs; to Ger Neville for the piping lament at the blessing of the plaque; to John Costello for consawing the limestone kerbing for a new flowerbed; to Michael and Ann Costello who donated flowers for the two beds; to Billy Sweeney who repainted the image on the huge crucifix; to James Slattery for the Memorial and Biblical plaques; to our FAS/CE workers and committee members who care for the grounds on a weekly basis, to our Parish Pastoral Committee and to all who helped on the day.

Our special visitor on the day was Peggy Curry from The Ragg and formerly from Ballybeg, Littleton. She brought along her pet dog and met many of her childhood friends.

As the 700-year-old rear wall of the church is in urgent need of repair, a tractor run is being organised. All contributions and participation in same will be much appreciated.
