An aerial shot of St Stephen's Cemetery in Clonmel
As part of Heritage Week, Clonmel Tidy Towns hosted an event in St Stephen’s Cemetery, which lies between Western Road and Abbey Road at the rear of Connolly Park.
At this event, the Tidy Towns group showcased their ongoing project to digitally map the graves. They installed an interactive QR code trail for visitors to discover the rich heritage hidden within its grounds.
Funding for this work was received from the Heritage Council under the Community Heritage Grant Scheme.
Clonmel Tidy Towns were also delighted to have historian Stephen Callaghan on board to share some of his insights.
Stephen is an independent historian, with a passion for burial grounds and memorial iconography. His recent books include Kilcomin Graveyard, County Offaly (2023) and Birr Military Cemetery (2020).
There was a great turnout on the day, with members of the Clonmel Historical and Archaeological Society and the Cahir Social and Historical Society in attendance.
Local residents also shared their memories of playing in the cemetery as children. Several enquiries were made about families buried there.
The digital map of the graves will be available on the Clonmel Tidy Towns website by the end of September.
You can follow Clonmel Tidy Towns on social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for updates.
