David Sadlier, a native of Holycross, has been appointed principal of the Abbey School in Tipperary Town.

The school holds the distinction of having the second-longest record of service in Ireland, dating back to the foundation of an Augustinian Friary on the site in Tipperary in 1300.

Trinity College Dublin holds the longest record of service in the country. David has more than 20 years of experience working in the education sector.

Prior to his recent appointment, he worked at Villiers School, a Co-Educational Boarding School in Limerick as a teacher of Chemistry and Mathematics and also as assistant principal, with responsibilities for facilitating School self-evaluation activities, and acting as Year Head to the Transition Year Group.

David was also responsible for providing a rich extracurricular programme which included working in the rugby department.

David has a degree in Science which he secured at University Limerick after completing his Leaving Certificate at St. Joseph's Secondary School, Borrisoleigh, Tipperary.

Further qualifications followed during his teaching career including a Post Graduate Diploma in School Planning and Policy Development and a Master’s Degree in Education, Leadership and Management.

Since 2018 he has also worked with the Limerick Education Support Centre and currently serves as Chairperson to the Management Committee.

Our congratulations to David on his appointment and every success and happiness to him in his new role in Tipperary Town.

Former principal John Kiely resigned from the role on August 31, and is now the Deputy Principal of the school while still continuing to teach mathematics.

Congratulations to 6th Year students, Robbie McGrath and Cillián Crowe, who have been appointed to the positions of School Captain and Vice-Captain respectively, for the coming year.

They were nominated by their peers, school staff, and engaged with an interview as the final stage in the recruitment process.

These two students have been consistent leaders in learning, sport, music and other extra curricular activities for the past five years.

Best wishes to them in their roles.

The Abbey Transition Years students are enjoying a school trip to Italy.

They have been exploring Sirmione, a resort town on the south bank of Lake Garda, and a visit to "The Floating City" of Venice; a journey of winding canals, striking architecture and beautiful bridges culminating in a tour of the Murano glass museum.

The Abbey School Open Night takes place on Thursday 26th October from 6pm to 8pm. 5th & 6th class students and their parents/guardians are invited to the school to meet teachers and management.

The staff hope to give all who attend a flavour of the school environment, the subjects and the many activities that take place in the Abbey.
