Ballingarry Community Café at Ballingarry Community Centre
Minister of State Mary Butler will officially open Ballingarry’s new Community Café at 11am this Sunday, October 22.
The Minister of State for Older People and Mental Health will be joined by local parish priest Fr Derry Quirke, who will bless the new venture, located at Ballingarry Community Centre just outside the village on the main Cashel to Kilkenny Road.
The café will be a community hub for the area as well as a place to meet with friends and neighbours for a cuppa and food.
Local producers of honey, jam, breads and other foods can sell their produce there while literature about local supports and services will be available. There will also be information about places of historic interest in the locality at the café.
Ballingarry Cllr Imelda Goldsboro says the idea for the café came about three months ago, and its main purpose is to bring people together, offering fresh, wholesome food at an affordable price in a safe and warm environment.
“Our aim is connectivity, whether you are passing by, a local or new to the area, you will be greeted by a friendly face. The café will be run by local volunteers of all ages, and Transition Year students from Presentation Secondary School, Ballingarry, who are joining us to gain experience.”
She reports the community centre has been transformed in recent weeks in preparation for the opening of the community café. New bathrooms have been installed, the centre has been painted and lighting upgraded to LED Lighting.
The café will open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 1.30pm.
Cllr Goldsboro says there will be a great variety of choice on the menu from full Irish breakfasts to roast of the day and lots more to suit all.
“We are delighted the Minister for Older People & Mental Health has agreed to open our facility, as we all know too well that loneliness can be very hard on so many people, and the difference a chat and welcoming face make to one’s life. We are also cognisant of our aging population and delighted to be able to offer such a great service in a rural area.
“We look forward to welcoming all, from near and far to see this new facility on Sunday,” she added.
