The popular Donal Clancy will perform at jerry Moynihans on Friday November 10
Donal Clancy will play his Folk ‘n Blues Revue in Jerry Moynihans,Clonmel on Friday November 10.
Donal Clancy’s Folk ‘n Blues Revue show was first commissioned by Gerry Lawless, of Clonmel World Music in 2019.
Gerry Lawless says “ I was doing a bit of work with Donal at the time and I spotted a series of blues songs videos he had put up on Youtube. He had been in New York and he did a full video session with college students, who filmed Donal singing these great blues songs in a stripped down format for a college project. I thought they were great videos, as I never knew he sang the blues. I asked him about it and it turns out he is a massive fan of the Blues songs and history. I asked him to put a show together of his favourite Blues songs for a festival I ran in 2019, and this will be his third time out on the road with the show."
The show includes classic blues songs from legends like Bob Dylan, Elizabeth Cotton, Rev Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, Jackson C. Frank, Big Bill Broonzy, and many others. Donal Clancy has been a keen student of the blues from a young age, and has a deep knowledge of the history of the blues songs he sings in the show.
It has been performed many times around Ireland since the 2019 premiere, and the Clonmel show is the first of a short Irish tour of the Folk ‘n Blues Revue.
The show includes brilliant bluesy versions of classics like Cocaine Blues, Blues Run The Game, Mr Bojangles, Dirty Old Town, Shuffle Rag, and Candyman, along with some of Donal’s own compositions.
Donal tells of the history of the songs and his personal connection to them, and regales the audiences with stories of how he had met a few of the legends with his father. The show really highlights his amazing guitar playing, and the audience really enjoy it.
The classic blues songs suit Donal Clancy's great guitar prowess, and his guitar playing style complements the Blues style.
Donal is the son of Liam Clancy, from the world famous Clancy brothers and he is proudly carrying on the family tradition of story telling and ballad singing of the highest order. Dónal grew up in a household and community steeped in music. He spent his early childhood in Canada and the US before his family settled back in An Rinn, Co. Waterford in 1983. Liam Clancy gave him his first guitar at the age of eight and he was playing professionally by his early teens. Donal was a member of Trad group Danu for many years, and he has toured and recorded with Riverdance fiddler, Eileen Ivers. He was a guest with The Chieftains on their Tears of Stone Tours in Japan and the US. Dónal Clancy, in his own right, is regarded as one of Ireland’s finest guitarists and ballad singers.

“The first time I met Dónal Clancy he was a small boy. The minute I heard his record it reminded me of his father: his tone and turn of phrase. As well as being a great singer Dónal is also a great guitar player.- Arty McGlynn
“Dónal Clancy’s new CD is a classic recording of a man and a guitar, great material beautifully played and sung.” - Martin Simpson
