The news that the 2024 Munster Fleadh is set to be held in Thurles has been welcomed by local TDs Michael Lowry and Jackie Cahill.

The Fleadh will take place from July 15 to 21 next year. Thurles previously hosted the Munster Fleadh in 1979 and 1968 along with hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 1965.

Deputy Lowry said that the staging of the Munster Fleadh Cheoil in Thurles next summer will be a huge boost to the town.
“Events such as these bring a significant benefit to the local economy with thousands of competitors and supporters flocking to the many events.

“They also shine a spotlight on the host town, giving people from across the province an opportunity to see what Thurles has to offer to visitors,” he said.

He said that for local people, this event will create the fun atmosphere that only a Fleadh Cheoil can do.

“This will be the first time that many people have had an opportunity to enjoy a Munster Fleadh in their home county, while for others it will be a chance to relive the memories of 1968 and 1979 when the streets of the town were alive with the sounds of traditional music and song,” he said.

Deputy Lowry congratulated Tipperary Comhaltas for securing the event and encouraged everyone to get behind them and give them all the support they need over the coming months to fund and host this great event.

Meanwhile, Deputy Cahill said that he was delighted to welcome the exciting announcement in recent days that Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2024 was coming to Thurles.

“This will be a major boost to the town with over 20,000 visiting Thurles for a celebration of Irish culture. Thurles is well experienced in welcoming large crowds to the town and I am sure that this event will be well organised and a warm welcome extended to the thousands of visitors our town will receive.

“This news has already received a positive response by local businesses and will be a much-welcomed boost to the local economy and our local businesses,” he said.

An exciting programme of events including concerts, gig-rig and street entertainment in Thurles will also take place alongside the Fleadh competitions.

The event will bring approximately 3,000 competitors to the town, with another 20,000 estimated visitors to the town over the few days.

This will bring a big boost to the town, especially for local businesses, but as with everything there are costs associated with staging such an event.

Tipperary Comhaltas are hosting a Night at the Dogs fundraiser for the Fleadh Thurles Greyhound Stadium on Saturday, November 25, at 7.30pm.

You can purchase tickets for €10 from any Branch Secretary or by contacting 087-6670770.

The branch said that your support would be very much appreciated in bringing a taste of the Fleadh to the dogs with this family event including live music, dancing and raffle on the night.
