Cormac Rea, Patricia Harte, Douglas Beaton and Amanda Kirwan in The Odd Couple female version
After the comedic success of cows in car chases for Culture Night, with Sacred Old Cow, the Clonmel Theatre Guild is set to have local audiences in stitches once more with Neil Simon’s much-loved comedy, The Odd Couple (female version) for dinner theatre 2023.
The theatre group is delighted to return to Raheen House Hotel, through December 5-8, under the directorial eye of Paul Sheehan and assistant-director Ethel Reynolds.
Madison and Unger are back with a bang. This time, in the guise of Olive, a slovenly yet highly successful sports writer and Florence, a neurotic and obsessive-compulsive housewife.
The show focuses on these unlikeliest of friends and their simultaneous navigation of difficult divorces. Set in 1980s New York City, this exquisitely penned comedy shines a light on female friendships, feminism and the representation of female sexuality, in a period where popular culture really began to capture the global consciousness.
REVISION
“Simon himself believed that this female-led revision of the play was superior to the original,” says director Paul Sheehan.
“It’s my third time helming the piece, in as many places and it never fails to present new nuggets of wisdom, themes which certainly resonate even still at present,” he said
This serendipitous fact certainly warrants mention, given that the Guild have produced the piece twice before, firstly in 1996, then a decade later in 2006.
Artistic Director of the Clonmel Theatre Guild, Suzanne Shine adds: “Neil Simon’s comic prowess is already undeniable, but to take a male-driven classic and flip the script is no mean feat. The play’s track record assures all will be left rolling in the aisles. Rehearsals are going really well and we are very excited to be presenting this re-imagining of such a great play to our audiences.”
A VOICE
Words cannot breathe without a voice, however, and the Guild are delighted to be bringing a mix of faces new and familiar, with a stellar cast comprised of Patricia Harte, Amanda Kirwan, Maria Clancy, newcomer Mansi Gupta, Jennifer Doyle and Blathnaid Moore.
Fear not, gentlemen! The girls won’t be having all the fun - Douglas Beaton and additional maiden voyager Cormac Rea round out the ensemble as the hilarious Costazuela brothers.
