Vacant former council office in Tipperary needs to be rejuvenated

Local Councillor Michael Smith says the building presents an opportunity for the local authority

Vacant former Council office in Roscrea needs to be rejuvenated

TIPPERARY County Councillor based in Roscrea,  Michael Smith (FF) says the Council cannot be an authority on vacancy while they have vacant buildings of their own on one of Roscrea's busiest approach roads.

Cllr Smith raised concerns about a Tipperary County Council building on the Birr Road, Roscrea at last month’s sitting of Thurles-Templemore District Council.

He said the building has been vacant since 2014 and local people have often highlighted it.

“We can’t promote the scheme when we have vacant buildings. It’s unsightly and needs renovating,” said Cllr Smith.

Cllr Smith suggested it be brought back into use to house a family.

Director of Services for the Thurles Municipal District Eamon Lonergan said he would follow the matter up with the roads section.

However, Cllr Smith said he wanted to keep it on the agenda for the new year’s meeting.

He said the building could be of value to the community for housing or even the expansion of a local school.

“You call it a complication. I say it’s an opportunity,” said Cllr Smith.
