Eagerly-awaited CCTV policy to come before Tipperary County Council

Tipperary County Council’s long-awaited CCTV policy is to come before elected members at the January plenary meeting.

Director of Services for Economic, Community and Rural Development Brian Beck told councillors at last month’s sitting of the

Thurles-Templemore District Council that the policy will ‘close holes’ in applications.

The council has been under pressure over the past year from elected members to create a policy and fund community led CCTV schemes. However, data protection issues and gardaí concerns have delayed the turning on of cameras.

This has led to frustration in communities, according to councillors.

“I can totally understand that frustration in the community. We get frustrated too, but on CCTV, we have to do it right, said Mr Beck.

Mr Beck was responding to a query from Cllr Sean Ryan of Littleton, a village currently awaiting approval for a CCTV scheme.

“We have cameras. You saw them outside the Muintir na Tire hall and all over the village. We are ready to go,” said Cllr Ryan.
