Hiker with leg injured rescued from Comeragh Mountains over Christmas period

SEMRA, Garda and ambulance vehicles parked at Kilclooney Wood near Rathgormack during the rescue operation

A hiker was rescued from the popular Coumshingaun Lake area of the Comeragh Mountains last Thursday after suffering a leg injury.

South Eastern Mountain Rescue team members received the call-out from An Garda Síochána to go to the aid of the injured woman, aged in her 50s, at 1.30pm on December 28

A SEMRA spokesperson said the walker suffered a lower leg injury while descending from the lake.

Gardaí were first on the scene of the accident at 2.15pm. SEMRA’s first hill party departed from Kilclooney Wood Car Park near Rathgormack at 2.30pm and the National Ambulance Service arrived shortly afterwards.
Coastguard Helicopter 117 from Waterford was also called out to the rescue mission but had to stand down due to difficult weather conditions.

After receiving initial medical treatment, the hiker was stretchered down off the hill as darkness fell and was handed over to the ambulance crew shortly after 5.30pm. The SEMRA spokesperson wished the injured walker a speedy recovery and paid tribute to the great multi-agency teamwork involved in the rescue.
