Thurles Courthouse

A Holycross man has been ordered to pay €200 to charity for being drunk in a public place at Thurles District Court.

Nicholas Irwin (42) of Sycamore Cottage, Holycross pleaded guilty to public intoxication contrary to Section 4 of the Public Order Act 1994 on Liberty Square on August 23, 2023.

Garda James Maher of Thurles Garda Station told the court that on the day of the incident, he approached the defendant, and when speaking to him, determined that he was intoxicated to the point that he posed a danger to himself. He was arrested and taken to Thurles Garda Station for his own safety.

Judge Catherine Hayden ordered the man to pay €200 to My Lovely Horse Rescue within six months.

She said that if he did, she would strike out the charge.
