A tree was planted to mark the foundation of the Canon Hayes Recreation Centre in Tipperary Town at the weekend
The 40th anniversary of the turning of the first sod at the Canon Hayes Recreation Centre in Tipperary Town was commemorated on Saturday April 6th with a tree planting ceremony by the founding committee. Despite adverse weather conditions the event went ahead at 2pm as planned.
Members of the founding committee present were; Dave Hickey, Pat Moroney, Kieran Tierney, Joan Bargary, Martin Quinn, Breeda Christie, John Joe O'Donoghue, Benny Merrigan and Paul Grisewood. Breeda Christie was given the honour of planting the tree assisted by various members of the founding committee. Paul Grisewood spoke briefly about the initial work involved in the procuring of the site and of the sourcing of the finance to build the complex. Tributes were paid to all who were involved in the development and to those who have carried on the work in managing the centre since it opened in 1987.
