American family members in Tipperary next week hoping to meet their Maher relatives

Finding a Maher in Tipperary should be easy - or at least some American descendants of 'Kilrush' Mahers are hoping so!

Members of an American family from New York State will be in county Tipperary for two days on Tuesday and Wednesday next, April 23 and 24, to visit the area from which their late grandfather, Connie Maher, emigrated to the States approximately 100 years ago.

The family are hoping that there might be some relatives about that they could catch up with for a chat and to help them with tracing their family roots that go all the way back to the Townlands of Kilrush (probably Kilrush just outside Thurles town on the Borrisoleigh Road, beyond Thurles Racecourse).

Cornelius (Connie) Maher was born in 1910 in Kilrush, county Tipperary, and emigrated to America around 1924 at the tender age of just 14. His father was Donal (Daniel) Maher. Cornelius had seven siblings, according to a letter 'The Nationalist' newspaper received from Kerry Maher-Hnath. Two of Connie’s siblings, Bea and Jane (both older than him) emigrated to New York City as did their grandfather, but the family are unaware if all three Maher siblings went to America together or separately. Connie’s other siblings were Mary, Madge, John, Tom and Dan, whom it is believed all stayed in Ireland.

Perhaps, there are descendants of these five still living in the Premier County who might like to make contact with some long-lost American relatives next week while they are on that brief visit. It would be greatly appreciated if they could.

Connie Maher lived in New York City for many years and later moved to Millbrook, NY and lived out the rest of his life there.
