Carrick-on-Suir MD councillors press for crash barriers for two roadsides with steep drops

Tipperary County Council has come under pressure to get crash barriers erected on two sections of roadside with steep drops behind them on Carrick-on-Suir’s outskirts and near Grangemockler.

Mullinahone Cllr Kevin O’Meara called at Carrick Municipal District’s May meeting for a crash barrier to be erected on one side of the N76 at Glenbower, South Lodge due to the drop of up to 10ft beyond the road.

The Independent councillor pointed out that a milk truck crashed on the other side of that section of road recently.

At the same meeting, Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Kieran Bourke urged the Council to complete the crash barrier on a section of the Dungarvan Road approach road into Carrick that overlooks the Castle Heights estate.

He said a crash barrier was installed at this location a number of years ago to protect the residents of Castle Heights but it needed to be extended further.

“The roof tops (of Castle Heights homes) are level with the roadway.

“This barrier needs to be completed. God knows what will happen if an accident happens on the road there,” he warned.

Cllr O’Meara said the council needs to set aside funding from its budget every year for these type of safety measures as the current system of applying for funding takes too long.

District Engineer Denis Power responded that he will have to seek funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland for a crash barrier for the N76 at Glenbower.

He also promised to take a look at the crash barrier on Carrick’s Dungarvan Road that Cllr Bourke wants extended.
