Volunteers are putting the finishing touches on preparing Powerstown Park Racecourse to host the annual Clonmel Agricultural Show, which is expected to attract over 20,000 visitors this Sunday, July 7.

The 159-year-old show is one of Munster’s biggest showcases of agricultural and rural life and the organisers are pulling out all the stops to ensure it’s a great day out for both competitors and visitors.

Victor Quinlan of the Clonmel Show Committee said they have around 60 volunteers working each evening this week preparing the racecourse for the show and will have up to 400 volunteers working at the event on the day.

Show Committee members are praying for good weather both before and after the show as it makes all the difference to the experience for visitors and participants.

The Show will feature competitions and events to suit every age and taste from the traditional cattle, sheep, pony, horse and poultry classes to showjumping, a dog show and pet show, flower arranging, vegetables, fruit, baking, arts and crafts classes and exhibitions.

It’s now the top agricultural show for sheep competitions with entrants from all over country competing in 113 classes.

Clonmel Show will also feature 66 cattle classes, 66 horse and pony classes and 21 horse and pony jumping competitions with the Grand Prix the most prestigious event.

Other attractions will be a food village with seating and live entertainment, a digger challenge, tractor driving skill tests, a large children's entertainment section and demonstrations by Emergency First Responders.

There will be an international fencing competition with three teams from the UK among the nine teams entered and a demonstration of Indian style tug-of-war by members of the local Indian community.

Donkey Derby

The biggest crowd pleaser of the day will be the Show’s famous Donkey Derby, which is celebrating its 45th year.
Clonmel Show takes place from 9am to 6pm on Sunday. Tickets cost €15 and entry for U-12s is free.

There will be overflow car parks open with park-and-ride transport to and from Powerstown Park.
