TUS Corn Dr Harty Cup - Group 3 - Round 2
Cashel Community School 0-17
St. Joseph's Tulla 0-17
A tense, skilful contest ensued this afternoon between Cashel CS and St Joseph’s Tulla and in the end, while both sides felt they had reasons for disputing late calls, all concerned had to be content with a draw at Cappamore.
A late equaliser by Clare minor star Matthew Corbett was sent over the bar from way out the field to level matters but then Cashel attacked in a last-gasp effort to win it.
An attacking handpass was adjudged to have been a throw by the Cashel attacker, much to the disbelief of the Cashel bench, resulting in a chance for Corbett to seal the win for the Banner side but just as he was about to strike the ball the referee blew the full time whistle.
Had either side lost the game they would have plenty of reason to focus on their own 'wides count' throughout the game rather than any one call, but overall the quality was high and chances were at a premium throughout the fast paced game.
Cashel started the game brightly with a strong wind at their backs in the first half and they immediately made use of the strong gale edging into a steady lead with Colin Bourke hugely influential.
The Cashel Community School captain struck six first half points and took serious watching.
Charlie Hall struck two first half points for the blue and gold clad group while Colm Ryan had a great first half for Cashel, getting on a lot of breaking balls, and he sent over the score of the half with a smashing point on the run heading in towards the 45 from the sideline.
Charlie hall's strike over the bar in the 20th minute put Cashel 0-10 to 0-5 clear but the wind was a contributing factor so Tulla had every chance in the second half.
By half time the Tipp lads led 0-11 to 0-8 with the Tulla side a little over dependent on Matthew Corbett to get things going up to speed until then.
Jerry O'Connor at full forward for the Clare side hit two sweet first half points and took watching from the Cashel defence while at the other end the Tulla keeper made two brilliant saves from close range.
The first was from a powerful Briain O Donoghue strike which was crucial in the game.
The keep also made a top class save in the second half in what was a game of fine margins.
Tulla had the wind in the second half and made full use of it immediately as they ate quickly into the Cashel lead.
They stormed back into the game and through the efforts of Cathal Leamy and full forward O'Connor in particular they were level by the three quarter mark.
Ryan Hayes was immense throughout for them at six and they eventually took the lead when it looked like the Aidan Harte (former Galway star) coached side would push on.
Credit Cashel for a fine response. They regrouped, brought on fresh legs and drove right back to ensure a thrilling finale.
Colin Bourke again called the shots while Cian Lonergan chipped in with a fine score. In defence Shane Cooney was dominant and Colm Ryan kept up his industrious workrate until full time.
They could have won it, indeed they could have lost it had there been time for the late free to be struck, but in the end a draw was the fairest result.
