Knockroe Passage Tomb located about 10km from Carrick-on-Suir near Ahenny
You don’t have to travel to Newgrange to experience the Winter Solstice this week as the phenomenon can also be experienced if weather conditions permit at Knockroe Passage Tomb about 10km from Carrick-on-Suir.
The dawn Winter Solstice alignment at Knockroe near Ahenny village is scheduled for 8.40am on Saturday, December 21 and closes with the sunset alignment at 3.40pm (Weather visibility permitting).
Stewarded parking will be available and visitors are requested to leave an additional 20 minutes to arrive on time.
As well as visiting Knockroe Passage Tomb, they are invited to join guided tours of parts of the Lingaun Valley on the day.
The tours include the Windgap Village Loop from the community centre in Windgap at 11am and the Slatequarries at 13.45pm.
Refreshments will be available in the nearby villages.
There will be breakfast and dinner in the Lakeside Tea Rooms in Windgap, takeaways in Grangemockler’s Auld Mill Bakery, tea coffee and scones in Owning House until 1pm with with evening meals by prior booking at the Dizzy Goat in Kilkieran.
Hot takeaway beverages will be available in Walsh's Shop in Windgap and Pete’s Shop in Kilmoganny with a pint or a hot whiskey in the pubs of Tullahought, Faugheen, Skough and Killamery.
The Solstice alignments can also be visible on the days approaching and preceding December 21.
