In a lively segment on The Late Late Show, Pat Shortt shared exciting news about his upcoming tour in Australia and New Zealand, highlighting performances at major festivals like the Brisbane Comedy Festival and the Melbourne Comedy Festival alongside his daughter Faye.
Appearing on the show alongside Mary McAleese and Mary Kennedy, the Thurles comedian spoke about how Faye and himself were looking forward to the trip Down Under.
“We’re looking forward to it,” he said, beaming with enthusiasm as usual. “They’re bringing us out early because of the breakfast show on Channel 7 in Sydney. It’ll be great fun!”
Reflecting on his past experiences in Australia, Shortt reminisced about a particularly memorable performance. “I did a tour there before on my own,” he recalled.
The conversation took a poignant turn as Shortt remembered his late friend and collaborator, John. “We lost John at the end of last year. Huge shock,” he admitted.
“We spent a lot of years together, and it was strange because we had a reunion tour in 2010.” He fondly recalled their work together on the film Banshees of Inisherin more recently: “That was a lovely experience. Martin (McDonagh - the director) wanted us for it, which was just lovely.”
Shortt shared a touching moment from the set, where he noticed the crew gathering to watch him and John perform. “Instead of people going away, a lot of the Irish crew came in to see D'Unbelievables. It’s iconic for people of a generation.”
As the segment wrapped up, viewers were treated to a clip of Shortt and his old friend John showcasing their classic comedic dynamic. “This is just classic comedy,” Shortt said, encouraging the audience to enjoy the clip.
With laughter and nostalgia, Pat Shortt reminded everyone of the power of comedy and the bonds it creates. For the Thurles native the stage now turns to the tour with his daughter Faye as they get ready to tour the world.
