Tipperary County Council’s free collection days for old mattresses were a big hit over the summer with over 1,000 of them handed in to its five Civic Amenity sites around the county.
The Council’s Director of Environment & Climate Action Services Eamon Lonergan reported on the success of the Mattress Amnesty initiative at the September meeting of the local authority’s councillors in Clonmel on Monday.

A total of 1,075 mattresses were disposed of and recycled at the Civic Amenity Sites in Cashel, Clonmel, Donohill, Roscrea and Donohill over four designated dates in June and July.
Mr Lonergan said the goal of the initiative was to reduce the illegal dumping of these bulky household items and in turn the cost of collecting and disposing them.
Councillors praised the initiative and called for it to be repeated.
Mr Lonergan responded that future mattress amnesties would be dependent on the Council securing Government funding, which it had for this summer’s initiative.
He assured councillors the Council will be applying for funding to run the scheme again next year but pointed out that it wasn’t expensive to dispose of an old mattress in a Civic Amenity Site in the interim.
