Independent Councillor John O’Heney has welcomed the approval of a landmark €30 million private investment to redevelop and secure the future of Waterford Airport, describing it as "fantastic news for the entire South East region, including Tipperary".

The investment, led by the Bolster Group through Waterford Airport Ltd (WAL), has been approved by Waterford City and County Council and will deliver a runway extension, upgraded terminal facilities, and the return of commercial passenger flights by 2027.

Cllr O’Heney said the announcement marks a major step forward in strengthening economic growth and regional connectivity:

"This is a milestone day for the South East. The redevelopment of Waterford Airport will not only enhance connectivity for Waterford, Wexford, and Kilkenny, but also deliver enormous benefits for Tipperary. Improved access to air travel will make our county more attractive for business investment, tourism, and trade. It’s a real game changer for the region."

Construction on the airport redevelopment is expected to begin early next year, with works taking approximately 12 months to complete. Once operational, the upgraded facility aims to handle up to 400,000 passengers annually within five years.

Cllr O’Heney highlighted several key benefits for Tipperary arising from the project:

- Enhanced Business Connectivity: Improved air access will support local enterprises and attract new investment opportunities to Tipperary.

- Tourism Growth: Easier travel routes will encourage more visitors to discover Tipperary’s unique heritage, scenery, and hospitality.

- Job Creation: Increased activity in tourism, transport, and supporting industries will help sustain and create employment throughout the region.

- Regional Cohesion: The development reinforces the South East as a unified economic region, strengthening ties between Waterford, Tipperary, and surrounding counties.
