Thousands of homes in Tipperary left without water after treatment plant system failure

Uisce Éireann works to restore Clonmel water supply as residents told to boil tanker water

Thousands of homes in Tipperary left without water after treatment plant system failure

Up to 8,000 homes and businesses across Clonmel are facing water outages or low pressure this morning following operational difficulties at the Glenary Water Treatment Plant on Tuesday night.

Uisce Éireann has confirmed that reservoir levels dropped overnight, disrupting supply to large parts of the town. Areas affected include Elm Park, Heywood Road, Glenconnor, Cherrymount, Ballingrane, Powerstown Road, Silver Springs, Clonmel town centre and surrounding districts.

The utility expects normal supply to return by 11am on Thursday, October 23, although it may take several hours longer for full water pressure to reach all properties, particularly those on higher ground or at the end of the network.

In the meantime, water tankers are being provided at several sites, including the Civil Defence Fire Station on Heywood Road and the Tesco car park on the by-pass. Additional supplies will be available from 3pm at Poppy’s Field on Cashel Road.

Residents are advised to bring their own containers and to boil any water collected from these tankers before drinking, in line with guidance from the Health Service Executive.

John Fogarty of Uisce Éireann acknowledged the disruption caused by the outage, saying:
“Uisce Éireann would like to apologise to all customers who are experiencing an interruption to their supply and would like to reassure them that we are working hard to resolve the issue.”

The company said operational teams are continuing to work on restoring the system, but that low reservoir levels will take time to recover. Typically, it takes two to three hours after repairs are completed for normal service to resume, though some customers may experience longer delays as the system recharges.
